Ultrasonic cleaning is a staple for SERVPRO of East Cobb when it comes to cleaning and restoring contents like textiles and electronics. While the majority of our Marietta and Kennesaw customer’s contents cleaning is performed by our Contents Restoration Professionals using traditional methods, there are some items that need a more specialized approach. That is where our ultrasonic cleaning comes in. These machines vary in size, based on what industry they are used in. Some are small enough to sit on a desk, commonly used in the jewelry industry, while some can take up an entire room and can be used to clean transmissions or even airplane parts! Regardless of the size of the machine, the way it works is the same. These systems are made up of a heated basin filled with ultrasonic cleaning solution. An ultrasonic transducer agitates the cleaning solution producing frequencies from 20-40 kHz. Items to be cleaned are placed in the cleaning solution. The transducer bombards the items with ultrasonic waves which form small bubbles on the surface of the item. Each bubble works as a tiny explosion removing the material adhering to the item that is being cleaned. 

The effectiveness of an ultrasonic machine is unmatched. It thoroughly cleans almost any item placed in it. Below are some common items that can be cleaned using these machines:

Macromist ULV Mister - Ultra-low volume (ULV) misters or macromisters compress liquid cleaning and sanitizing products like SERVPROXIDE or Benefect through a specially designed nozzle which produces a fine cold mist or aerosol. These types of misters produce extremely small droplets ranging in size from 1-150 micrometers and have a wide variety of restoration applications including disinfecting surfaces along with mold and odor control. Typically air tight containment is set up around the area to be treated, where technicians, donning personal protective equipment (PPE) like respirators, gloves, eye protection, and tyvek suits, liberally mists the entire area to encapsulate unwanted odors and/or sanitize surfaces.

Thermal Fogger - Thermal foggers are very similar to mister in that they produce very fine aerosolized particles. They differ from them in the way they produce fog and the size of the particles they produce. Thermal foggers produce particles one micrometer or smaller and utilize heat to vaporize fogging solutions. When thermal fogging an area, air tight containment is erected around the area to be treated. Then a technician wearing the aforementioned PPE will liberally fog the entire area to sanitize surfaces and/or encapsulate unwanted odors.

Ozone Generator - Ozone generators do exactly what the name infers, they create ozone. Ozone is created by splitting oxygen into two solitary atoms. Each oxygen atom then attaches itself to a whole oxygen molecule to create an ozone molecule. Splitting of these molecules can be accomplished in two ways, Corona discharge which uses electrical discharge to split atoms and ultraviolet (UV) radiation which uses UV light to split oxygen molecules. On a molecular level ozone is very unstable meaning that its molecular bonds break down very easily and quickly (typically about 20 minutes). When ozone molecules come in contact with odors and/or bacterial molecules they bond with them, then break down destroying the odor and/or bacterials.

Thanksgiving Cooking Safety Tips From Your Friends at SERVPRO of East Cobb

Each November, families gather to celebrate Thanksgiving by preparing a delicious feast, but if you don’t practice safe cooking habits, your happy holiday could quickly become hazardous in a blink of an eye. According to the The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), cooking is the main cause of home fires and injuries, with the Thanksgiving holiday being the peak day for cooking-related fire emergencies. Review the following safety tips to help ensure you can enjoy a safe holiday.

• Never Leave cooking food unattended. Stay in the kitchen while frying, grilling, or broiling food. If someone must leave the kitchen for even a short period of time, they should turn off the stove.
• Check food regularly while cooking and remain in the home while kitchen equipment is in use. Use a timer as a reminder that the stove or oven is on.
• Keep small children away from the cooking area. Enforce a “kid-free zone” and make them stay at least three feet away from the stove and oven.
• Keep anything flammable like pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels away from the stove, oven, or other appliances in the kitchen that generates heat.
• Do not wear loose clothing or dangling sleeves while cooking.
• Clean cooking surfaces on a regular basis to prevent grease build-up.
• Purchase a fire extinguisher to keep in the kitchen year round. Contact the local fire department for training on the proper use of fire extinguishers if you are unsure.
• Always check the kitchen before going to bed or leaving the home to make sure all kitchen appliances like stoves, ovens, and toasters are turned off.
• Install a smoke alarm near the kitchen, on each level of the home, near sleeping areas, and inside and outside of bedrooms. Use the test button to check it is working properly every month. Replace the batteries at least once a year.

Choosing the Appropriate Fire Extinguisher

• Class A: This is the most common extinguisher and can be used to put out fires in ordinary combustibles such as cloth, wood, rubber, paper, and many plastics.

• Class B: Used on fires involving flammable liquids, such as grease, gasoline, and oil.

• Class C: Designed for fires involving appliances, tools, or other equipment electronically energized or plugged in.

• Class D: For use on flammable metals; often specific for the type of metal in question. These are typically found in factories.

• Class K: Intended for use on fires that involve vegetable oil, animal oils, or fats in cooking appliances. Generally found in commercial kitchens.

Keep an eye out for snow build-up on roofs!

Winter weather can bring about more issues than just slippery roads and a sidewalk to shovel. If you live where temperatures sink below freezing level, you are also at risk for frozen pipes and ice dams, which can create a major disaster at your home or property.

Frozen Pipes

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your home, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages or kitchen cabinets.

A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage. A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly.

To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross:

• Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines as well as outside hoses.
• Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
• When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets that may come from exposed pipes.
• Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

Ice Dams

Ice dams can be a little-known, but major problem during the snowy season. They form when heated air melts roof snow downward into water dammed behind still-frozen ice. Beautiful holiday decorations like lights, candles, and lawn displays are just a few of the things that make the holiday season seem to come alive with charm and cheer. However, if they are not used carefully and well maintained your holidays could go from festive to frightening in no time at all.

The American Red Cross offers the following safety tips to help greatly reduce the fire risk in your home or business this holiday season.

1. Place Christmas trees, candles and other holiday decorations at least three feet away from heat sources like fireplaces, portable heater, radiators, heat vents, and candles.
2. Make sure light strings and other holiday decorations are in good condition. Do not use anything with frayed electrical cords and always follow the manufacturer's instructions.
3. Always unplug tree and holiday lights before leaving the property or going to bed.
4. Never use lit candles to decorate a tree. Always extinguish candles before leaving the room or going to bed.
5. Use only sturdy tree stands designed not to tip over. Keep curious pets and children away from Christmas trees.
6. Keep anything that can catch fire away from your stove top (pot holders, oven mitts, wooden utensils, paper or plastic bags, food packaging, and towels or curtains).
7. Designate one person to walk around your property to ensure all candles and smoking materials are properly extinguished after guests leave.
